ABOUT THE GARDEN

The Balasun Tea Estate stands as a testament to the rich history and dedication to quality that defines Darjeeling tea. Nestled amidst picturesque landscapes near Sonada, this estate boasts an ideal combination of altitude, climate, and natural beauty that contributes to its renowned tea production. Established in 1871 by M/s Davenport & Company Ltd., the plantation initially carried the name Nahore Balasun, derived from the Lepcha dialect. Over time, it came to be known simply as Balasun, named after the river that gracefully meanders through its grounds. Jay Shree Tea and Industries took ownership of the estate in 2005 and embarked on a journey of rejuvenation and modernisation. Through significant investments in infrastructure, technology, and employee welfare, the management has propelled Balasun Tea Estate to new heights of excellence. Balasun Tea Estate's commitment to quality and sustainability is evident through its various certifications, including Fair Trade certification from FLO-CERT, HACCP certification by TUV-NORD, UTZ certification by IMO, and SAN/Rainforest Alliance certification from IMO. These accolades underscore the estate's adherence to ethical and environmental standards, ensuring that its tea not only delights the palate but also supports responsible practices. Visitors to Balasun Tea Estate are treated to more than just a cup of tea; they immerse themselves in a holistic experience that encompasses the beauty of nature, the legacy of tradition, and the promise of a sustainable future. tasting note

I. Dry Leaf AnalysisThe dry leaf presents an exquisite example of precision manufacturing. Comprising whole, succulent leaves punctuated by a generous abundance of silvery tips, the visual palette transitions seamlessly from lush spring green to a deep, resonant forest green. The craftsmanship is evident in the expert rolling, which has achieved a sophisticated, tightly curled aesthetic. On the nose, the dry leaf is remarkably expressive, carrying a distinct "fire"—a testament to a masterful firing process that anchors the brighter aromatics with a warm, toasted complexity.

II. Infusion Upon infusion, the leaves unfurl to reveal a vibrant forest green hue, underscored by a strong, resilient character and deep olive undertones. The olfactory profile is exceptionally clean and focused, characterized by the primary aroma of steamed tender beans. This "green" freshness indicates a perfectly timed harvest and minimal oxidation, preserving the tea's intrinsic vitality.

III. Liquor AssessmentThe resulting liquor is a study in brilliance and clarity. In the cup, it displays a luminous appearance akin to pale primrose or molten sunlight gold.

Initial Note: The palate opens with a lively, spirited astringency that is both refreshing and assertive, typical of a high-elevation clonal selection.

Mid-Note: The experience evolves into a smooth, vegetal sweetness, providing a balanced weight to the mouthfeel.

The Finish: The cup concludes with a long, sophisticated floral finish. It is reminiscent of delicate white spring blossoms—retaining a lingering sweetness that is both ethereal and clean.
