The concept of tea meditation finds its roots in Zen Buddhism. In Zen tradition, tea ceremonies are a form of meditation where practitioners focus on mindfulness and concentration. Tea meditation helps practitioners slow down and savour the moment. It enhances their senses so that even the smallest pleasures—like drinking a cup of tea—become an experience to remember and cherish. Tea meditation and its benefits
Tea meditators often experience an increased sense of gratitude after each session, which can improve their mood and overall well-being. So, how do you begin tea meditation? Well, the answer is simple! It starts the moment you choose your tea and begin to focus on it as an object of awareness. Practising tea meditation every morning can help you start your day with gratitude, mindfulness, and a sense of calm.
HOW IS TEA MEDITATION DONE?
- Select your tea cup: To begin your tea meditation session on a positive note, select a cup that appeals to you. You can pick a cup that feels good in your hand. Check the size, texture, colour and shape of the handle. Look for a cup that is comfortable to hold and touch. You can also pick a cup with a wide rim as it lets you enjoy the full flavour of the tea by letting it cool slightly before drinking.
- Pick the tea: Depending on your mood or preferences, you can pick the tea you want for your meditation session. So, ask yourself these questions - “Do I want a bold blend that will last all day?” Or “Do I want something with a subtle and delicate aroma?”
- Brew: The third step in your tea meditation session is to brew your tea. Take your kettle and pour fresh water in it, bringing it to a light boil. While the water boils, practise simple breathing exercises. As you sit comfortably, start focusing on the moment by listening to the faint whistles from the kettle. At this point all of your senses should be active. Practise slow in-and-out breaths until it is time to turn the kettle off.
- Acknowledge your senses. Let your tea steep while you slow down, preparing for the final leg of your tea meditation. Now that your senses are heightened, you can listen to the sound of the pouring tea and smell its sweet scent. When you hold your cup with both hands and take a deep breath, notice how the warmth of the tea spreads through your body. Sip slowly; relish each moment as if it were special and magical.
